relief shelters.
Program Details
The Learning Barge is a collaborative design and
fabrication initiative of students from the School of
Architecture and School of Engineering and Applied
Science that incorporates research and sustainable
design principles to promote environmental
education on the Elizabeth River, one of the most
polluted estuaries of the Chesapeake Bay. The
floating field station is powered by solar and wind
energy, collects rainwater, filters gray water with
native plants and utilizes recycled and renewable
materials.
The integrated educational component for K-12
school children, adults and seniors offers
opportunities to experience the river firsthand and
engage in hands-on exploration and learning. The
project is a collaboration with an environmental
non-profit organizatin, the Elizabeth River Project,
based in Portsmouth, Virginia.

The Asia Institute is an interdisciplinary organization comprised of the Center for South Asian Studies, the Tibet Center, and the East Asia Center of the University of Virginia that provides Asia-focused education and outreach to K-12 and the community.

The mission of Adopt-a-Grandparent is to create meaningful, one-on-one relationships with seniors in the Charlottesville community that will improve the quality of life of participants, both seniors and volunteers. We want to make sure the seniors in our community know how special they are to us!

HELP Line (295-TALK) is an anonymous, confidential telephone service serving the residents of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the University of Virginia. We are a student-run, student-operated program, staffed entirely of volunteers, affiliated with Madison House.
