Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a
student-run organization that conducts
service projects during winter,
spring, and summer break for
University of Virginia students.
The mission of Alternative Spring
Break (ASB) is to bring together
members of the University community,
who might not otherwise interact in
their usual social spheres, in the
common goals of service to and
education about the global community,
in order to promote and train future
service leaders of Virginia. Through
Alternative Spring Break, students may
participate in group community service
projects during winter, spring, and
summer breaks, while learning about
cultures and environments different
from their own.
First founded at the University or
Virginia as a Madison House program in
1992, Alternative Spring Break is now
an independent, student-run
organization. Now a national
organization, thousands of students
from universities across the nation
participate in their own Alternative
Spring Break programs. In recent
years, UVA ASB has grown to become one
of the largest programs in the country.
