The McGuffey Reading Center at the
University of Virginia is the oldest
organization of its kind in the United
States. McGuffey offers diagnostic and
remedial services as well as teaching
clinics, which are staffed by graduate
students and supervised by resident
faculty.
The McGuffey Reading Center offers
diagnostic and remedial services to
children and adults who are struggling
with reading, writing, and/or
spelling. Diagnostic services consist
of a thorough evaluation of literacy
development and corrolary language
skills. Students who are not yet
reading are assessed in the areas of
phonological awareness, vocabulary,
alphabet knoweldge, and fundamental
concepts of print. Beginning readers
are assessed additionally in the areas
of phonics and decoding, word
recognition, oral reading in context,
and comprehension. Readers at higher
levels are assessed also in areas
relating to speed, fluency, and study
skills. Remedial services are offered
during the academic year and to the
local community during the summer.
The summer reading clinic provides
individualized tutoring in the areas
of fluency, comprehension, writing,
and word study (phonics, spelling,
decoding, and vocabulary). Tutoring
occurs in a practicum setting.
Graduate students seeking licensure as
reading specialists serve as tutors
and are supervised by Curry faculty
and staff.
