The purpose of the Introduction to
Engineering (ITE) program is to
acquaint high school students with
engineering, mathematics, and science,
and also serves to inform them about
the requirements and demands of
undergraduate studies in engineering
at UVA.
The ITE program was established in
1987 as MITE and is designed to give
rising high school juniors and seniors
a broad but comprehensive experience
in the study of engineering at the
University of Virginia. Participants
experience many aspects of university
life in a supervised atmosphere,
including living in residence halls,
eating in dining halls around the
grounds and interacting with fellow
students from Virginia and all over
the country.
The program format includes daily
participation in introductory
engineering course work, seminars on
college admissions and financial aid,
demonstrations, experiments and
departmental and university tours.
Faculty members and graduate students
from various departments give lectures
and answer questions relating to
studies and careers in the different
engineering disciplines.
The ITE program is open to all
students who have completed their
junior year or qualified rising
juniors will also be considered. First-
generation college students and
populations historically under-
represented in engineering are
encouraged to apply.
The program is usually held in mid-
July and lasts approximately one week.
A $300 entrance fee is required upon acceptance into the Introduction to Engineering program. Limited scholarship funds are available upon demonstrated need.
